Koyasan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. With over 100 temples, a spectacular forest cemetery, and misty landscapes, it offers endless opportunities for stunning compositions and cultural storytelling.

Whether you’re drawn to the mystery of Kongobuji’s rock garden, the towering pagoda of Danjo Garan, or the ethereal glow of Okuno-in’s lanterns at dusk, Koyasan rewards those who take the time to observe, wait, and connect.

Nestled in the mist-shrouded mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, Koyasan is a living testament to Japan’s spiritual and natural soul. Founded in the 9th century by the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), this sacred village has spent over a millennium cultivating an atmosphere where history, faith, and nature converge in harmony. For those drawn to the art of photography, Koyasan is a playground of light and texture, where every frame tells a story of devotion and impermanence. And for anyone who picks up a camera here, it’s both a responsibility and a privilege to capture its essence with care.

Each return visit has deepened my appreciation for this spiritual sanctuary, where the cedar forests, ancient temples, and lantern-lit paths whisper the secrets of the past. This is why Koyasan holds a central place in our Photo Tours. Here, photography becomes a form of meditation.

Danjo Garan

This sprawling temple complex is the heart of Koyasan’s religious life. Its layout mirrors a mandala, with the Konpon Daito Pagoda at its center, a 27-meter tall vermilion tower that dominates the skyline. The Kondo Hall, Miedo Hall, and Saito Pagoda offer a rich tapestry of textures, from weathered wood to golden statues. Surrounded by majestic Japanese cedars and stone lanterns, Danjo Garan is a unique setting, inspiring both day and night photography.

Okuno-in: Japan’s Largest Forest Cemetery

A 2-kilometer-long necropolis shaded by ancient cedars, Okuno-in is where Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum rests. The path to the mausoleum is lined with 200.000 graves, including those of samurai, monks, and modern figures like Natsume Soseki and Hashimoto Ryutaro. The atmosphere is otherworldly, especially at dawn or dusk, when the lanterns of Torodo Hall cast a golden glow over the moss-covered stones.

Hiking to the Summit of Mount Koya

For those seeking a little bit of adventure, the hike to the summit of Mount Koya offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The trail is steep but rewarding, with hidden shrines and stone markers along the way. In the early morning during the rainy season and in winter, a veil of mist envelops Mount Koya, giving it a magical atmosphere.

Best Periods

All our tours are custom-made and available year-round (except in July and August). However, not every season is ideal for all photographic subjects. To ensure the best possible photographic conditions in Koyasan, and based on my experience, I recommend the following periods:

  • April to June (Sakura to rainy season)

  • November - December (Autumn colors)

  • January - February (Snow)

April to June

In April, Koyasan is adorned with the spectacular beauty of Sakura, as cherry blossoms frame the temples in a delicate display of pink and white. This is the season to fully appreciate new beginnings, a time to immerse yourself in the temples, surrounded by an exceptional floral backdrop.

In May-June, this is the moment to capture Koyasan as it was always meant to be seen, alive with color and serenity. The morning mists that often rise during this time also add a touch of mystery. As the rainy season begins, Koyasan reveals another layer of its enchantment. The lush greenery of Momiji (maple trees) contrasts beautifully with the velvety moss carpets that blanket the temples' gardens.

November to December

From November to December, Koyasan transforms into a living canvas of autumn, as the Momiji ignite the landscape in reds, oranges, and golds. The temples seem to glow with a warm, seasonal radiance, offering a breathtaking spectacle that feels almost otherworldly. The milder climate of this season also invites unhurried photography, allowing us to fully savor the interplay of light and color, and capture the serene beauty of Koyasan at its most majestic.

January to February

While every season has its charm, winter is particularly magical. Koyasan and the surrounding mountain are often veiled in mist. The light becomes soft and diffused, casting a timeless hue over the sacred grounds. And let’s not forget the snow! It transforms Koyasan into a fairy-tale landscape, offering unforgettable night photography sessions.
