Kyushu is an island of untamed beauty, ancient traditions, and dramatic landscapes. With its rugged coastlines, serene gardens, and lush rice terraces, every corner offers a new perspective. This Photo Tour is designed to immerse you in the very soul of this unique region. Here, we capture a rich tapestry of history and nature, distilled into its most breathtaking form. Striking scenery, wild shores, and stunning temples converge, creating a playground for photographers who seek authenticity.

Nestled at the southwestern edge of the archipelago, the Kyushu region is another photographer's paradise where the forces of nature and deep-rooted traditions intertwine. Shaped by volcanic energy and embraced by distinct coastal seas, this island remains a sanctuary of profound contrast. Far from the well-trodden tourist paths of central Honshu, Kyushu offers a mystical, layered atmosphere, perfect for photographers seeking raw authenticity, historical depth, and untouched beauty.

Few places in Japan offer such a compelling dialogue between land and water, where dramatic tides reshape the coastlines and ancient shrines stand watch over the waves. Along these shores, historic stones whisper stories of a complex past. It is a photographer's playground of light and texture, where every frame captures the spirit of an island forged by volcanos and sculpted by the sea.

For many years, I have returned to these shores, chasing the fleeting morning light across shifting bays, tracking the silhouettes of forgotten relics, and discovering the quiet corners that define Kyushu’s soul. On this tour, we immerse ourselves in a world where time slows, allowing the elements, the architecture, and the heritage to dictate our art.

I’m delighted to share my knowledge and the hidden gems I’ve discovered over the years. Join me, and let’s capture the wild heart of Kyushu, together.

Why Join This Tour

We explore this beautiful island aboard a comfortable private vehicle, moving entirely at our own pace. This seamless travel allows us to focus on the fleeting conditions of light in total tranquility. By avoiding rigid schedules, we stay far from the crowded tourist hubs.

Our accommodations are selected with the utmost care for their quality and strategic positioning. Staying just moments away from the shorelines ensures we never miss the pristine morning light. This proximity also gives us the vital flexibility to revisit locations. We can adapt our timing precisely to the shifting coastal tides and changing weather.

7-Day Tour

Our 7-day tour begins along the wild coasts of Oita, where we capture the dramatic rock formations and solitary Torii. This rugged shoreline provides an incredible canvas for long exposures and minimalist compositions.

We then travel directly to the shores of the Ariake Sea to explore the region's most iconic maritime landscapes. Here, we photograph sacred Torii as they gradually submerge with the rising tides. We also capture the intricate geometric patterns of the Nori seaweed farms. Along the tide flats, we seek out the weathered Tanajibu fishing huts perched on high stilts.

To contrast these coastal waterscapes, we visit a magnificent traditional garden tailored for minimalist photography. Finally, we conclude our journey by photographing the illuminated Kumamoto Castle at night.

If time allows, we conclude our journey in the southern region of Kumamoto. This final exploration offers a minimalist study of a coastal shrine, its solitary Torii, and its stone lanterns standing in the sea.

10-Day Tour

Our 10-day tour covers all the highlights of our 7-day itinerary while allowing for a much deeper exploration. We extend our route north to capture the quiet, minimalist coastlines of the Fukuoka region.

From there, we travel to the serene waters of Omura Bay. This historical area allows us to photograph the moving silhouettes of World War II concrete remains slowly weathering in the sea. We also spend dedicated time overlooking the spectacular Sasebo Bay, famous for its dense cluster of ninety-nine islands.

Finally, we immerse our lenses in the distinctive atmospheric landscapes surrounding Nagasaki City. Depending on the season, this expanded journey takes us inland to capture the sculptural lines of hidden rice terraces and secluded waterfalls.

Cultural Immersion

Kyushu is deeply steeped in feudal history and spiritual folklore. Dominating the skyline, the monumental Kumamoto Castle stands as a brilliant testament to Japan’s samurai past. In contrast, the cosmopolitan history of Nagasaki City offers a fascinating glimpse into centuries of unique international trade. The region is a treasure trove of sacred hillside shrines and meticulously manicured traditional gardens. Each site provides a tranquil space to contemplate the harmony between local architecture and nature.

My passion for Japanese history, combined with the presence of my Japanese wife, ensures highly enriching site visits. Throughout our journey, you will benefit from an endless source of cultural insights. We look forward to sharing personal anecdotes about daily life and timeless traditions in Japan.

If you’d like to see the photo spots we visit during this tour, I invite you to browse my Kyushu portfolio here.

All the subjects featured in my portfolio have been photographed over many years. Some trees, rock formations, or other subjects no longer exist in the same form or no longer exist at all. Depending on the season, the challenging conditions along the coasts also mean that not all locations are always accessible.

If you are considering joining us for a tour, please do not hesitate to reach out for more details about these subjects. I’d be happy to share the latest updates based on my recent visits.

Best Periods

All our tours are custom-made and available year-round (except in July and August). However, not every season is ideal for all photographic subjects. To ensure the best possible photographic conditions in Kyushu, and based on my experience, I recommend the following periods:

  • April to June (Sakura to rainy season)

  • October to February (Seaweed cultures)

In April - June, the climatic conditions generally allow for a more precise approach to the coasts. The weather is milder, enabling much longer photography sessions that can extend into night photography. In June, if the rainy season begins, we also benefit from the morning mists that transform the coasts and lakes into mysterious landscapes.

In October - December, we take advantage of the wilder autumnal conditions, which lend the East China Sea its unique contrasts. During this period, we focus specifically on capturing the rugged rock formations. We also immerse ourselves in the splendid autumn colors of the region’s iconic temples and gardens. At this time of year, we photograph the geometry and textures of fishing nets stretching across the quiet bays.

In January - February, we embrace the serene beauty of winter and its soft, diffused light. Mist and rain open up endless possibilities for exploring a minimalist approach, adding a magical touch to every frame.

While the coastal conditions can be more challenging at this time of year, it only enhances the adventure. Photography sessions become an exhilarating dance with the elements. When the weather turns, we take the opportunity to visit breathtaking cultural sites, ensuring every single moment is rich with artistic inspiration.
