This Photo Tour is an invitation to explore the minimalist landscapes that have made Lake Biwa legendary among photographers worldwide. Together, we go beyond the well known spots to discover its hidden gems. We photograph over 50 subjects across 30 carefully selected sites, each chosen for its beauty, symbolic resonance, and photographic potential.

Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest and one of the world’s oldest lakes, is a cultural landmark that captivates visitors with its breathtaking natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and deep historical roots.
For over two decades, I have wandered its shores, discovering and rediscovering its unique landscapes with each passing season. Having the privilege of living nearby, every moment spent there is a new instant of serenity, rich with discoveries and encounters with the trees that have shaped my work along Biwa’s edges.
Through my Photo Tour, I have the pleasure of sharing my knowledge and experience of the lake. I guide you through its hidden gems and its distinctive landscapes, chasing the light with photographers eager to deepen their passion for minimalist photography.
Whether you are drawn to color or black and white, the lights of Biwa will not leave you untouched.

Why Join This Tour?
During this Photo Tour, we travel by private vehicle, taking our time to explore and savor each fleeting moment of light, in complete tranquility, far from the country’s tourist hubs.
Accommodations are carefully selected for their prime locations and quality, ensuring we’re always just steps away from the coasts and lakes’ most photogenic spots. This allows us to capture the exceptional morning light and revisit locations at optimal times, guided by the tides, all tailored to your preferences and pace.
Our 3-day tour explores the eastern shore of Lake Biwa while ensuring a morning visit to the major spots on the western shore, such as the Torii of Shirahige Shrine or the floating pavilion (Ukimido) of Mangetsuji Temple (photo below). We stay in two different hotels, both ideally located.

A full exploration of Lake Biwa’s shores requires more time. Our 5-day tour allows us to circle the entire lake while dedicating ample time to photography sessions. It also permits revisiting certain spots depending on the weather conditions. We stay in four different hotels, including one night in an Onsen Ryokan.
In winter, we visit nearby Lake Yogo to capture its snowy landscapes, weather permitting (photo below).

For All Levels of Photographers
Because photography is first and foremost a world of passion, connections, and sharing, we are thrilled to welcome all passionate photographers, regardless of their level of experience.
Beginner photographers appreciate the unique setting of Lake Biwa to develop their technical skills, while also receiving tailored advice to refine their minimalist approach and their perspective on aquatic landscapes.
Advanced photographers appreciate taking their time to ensure the quality of their work, knowing that logistics and travel are perfectly managed. This allows them to focus solely on their creative process, confident that they will arrive at each location at the ideal moment for the best light and conditions.

Cultural Immersion
We also take advantage of the proximity to remarkable historical and cultural sites, offering you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of Japanese culture. Depending on your preferences, our 5-day tour also include visits to temples, castles (such as the national treasure Hikone Castle or the elegant Nagahama Castle), and historic villages.
My passion for Japanese history and culture, combined with the presence of my Japanese wife, ensures fascinating and enriching visits. You also benefit from an endless source of insights and anecdotes about daily life in Japan.

If you’d like to see the photo spots we visit during this tour, I invite you to browse my Lake Biwa portfolios here.
All the subjects featured in my portfolios have been photographed over many years. Some trees or other subjects no longer exist in the same form or no longer exist at all. The challenging conditions along the shores of Lake Biwa also mean that not all locations are accessible year round.
If you are considering joining us for a tour, please do not hesitate to reach out for more details about these subjects. I’d be happy to share the latest updates based on my recent visits around the lake.

Best Periods
All our tours are custom-made and available year-round (except in July and August). However, not every season is ideal for all photographic subjects. To ensure the best possible photographic conditions, and based on my experience, I recommend the following periods:
April to June (Sakura to rainy season)
December to February
In early April, we take advantage of the cherry blossom season to visit the iconic Hikone Castle, renowned for its breathtaking sakura. Considered one of Japan’s most beautiful cherry blossom spots, it’s a must-visit for enthusiasts of the season.
In June, if the rainy season graces us with its presence, we chase the ethereal veils of mist that drift across the lake, softening the landscape into a dream. Here, the lush foliage of the trees stands in striking contrast to the serene horizon, where water and sky merge in a perfect reflection.
In winter, however, we turn our lens to the sculptural beauty of these trees, their gnarled branches and twisted trunks, carved by wind, water, and the harsh embrace of the seasons.
It’s naturally the period I recommend for lovers of minimalism.
No matter which season you choose for your Photo Tour with us, you’ll build a comprehensive portfolio of Lake Biwa’s iconic landscapes. One you’ll be fully satisfied with. And you’ll leave with just one desire: to return.

If you wish to learn more about the natural, cultural, and historical treasures of Lake Biwa and its region, I invite you to read my dedicated articles, here.
I hope you’ll find valuable information here to help you choose the best season and spots for your photography. Once you have an idea of what you’re looking for, we can guide you further, refining your choices and tailoring the tour together to meet your expectations and budget.
We look forward to welcoming you on this journey, where photography becomes a shared dialogue with Lake Biwa’s landscapes, nature, and Japanese culture. Together, let’s capture not just images, but moments of inspiration, serenity, and discovery. Come and let’s create memories through the lens!
