This Photo Tour is designed to immerse you in the Ariake Sea’s dramatic waterscapes. We explore the most captivating spots, from the Nori seaweed nets and rustic Tanajibu fishing huts to the serene gardens and historic Kumamoto Castle. For those seeking a deeper experience, the extended tour also includes the southern Ariake Sea region, where nature’s rhythm and cultural soul intertwine.

Japan’s Ariake Sea, the country’s largest bay, is a place where nature’s grandeur and human tradition intertwine. With its breathtaking 6-meter tides, the Ariake Sea transforms its shores twice daily, revealing a dynamic landscape that captivates photographers and travelers alike.
Timeless landmarks like coastal shrines, fishing huts, and sprawling Nori seaweed farms stand as witnesses to the harmony between farmers, fishermen and the sea. For those who seek to capture the soul of Japan through their lens, the Ariake Sea offers a symphony of light, texture, and cultural depth.
Between Tides and Traditions
Stretching across the prefectures of Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Fukuoka, the Ariake Sea is a living canvas for photographers. Its vast expanse covers 1.700 square kilometers and its dramatic tides expose and submerge the shore in a rhythmic dance. The sea’s unique ecosystem supports one of Japan’s most iconic traditions: Nori seaweed farming. The geometric patterns of the seaweed nets, suspended above the water, create mesmerizing abstract compositions, especially at dawn or dusk when the light is soft and the world is still.

The Ariake Sea is also dotted with Tanajibu, traditional fishing huts perched on stilts (photo above). These weathered structures tell stories of generations of fishermen and their deep connection to the sea. They are perfect subjects for minimalist and long exposure photography.
The region is also home to stunning Torii gates and lanterns in water, often partially submerged during high tide, creating surreal waterscapes that blend the sacred and the natural. Nearby, the Kumamoto Garden and Castle offer a serene counterpoint to the wild beauty of the sea.

Why Join This Tour?
During this Photo Tour, we travel by private vehicle, taking our time to explore and savor each fleeting moment of light, in complete tranquility, far from the country’s tourist hubs.
Accommodations are carefully selected for their prime locations and quality, ensuring we’re always just steps away from the coasts most photogenic spots. This allows us to capture the exceptional morning light and revisit locations at optimal times, guided by the tides, all tailored to your preferences and pace.
The coast is a true photographer’s paradise, where the interplay of light, water, and tradition creates a symphony of visual poetry. The rustic charm of Tanajibu huts, the geometric elegance of Nori nets, and the spiritual presence of Torii gates offer endless inspiration.
Over the years, I’ve returned to this magical place time and again, drawn by its ever-changing light and the endless possibilities it offers to capture both the soul and the whispers of the sea.

4-Day Tour
Our 4-day tour focuses on the iconic spots of Ariake. We primarily explore the eastern shore of the Ariake Sea in the Kumamoto region, as well as the northwestern area. This allows us to cover all the highlights that define Ariake’s maritime landscape: Tanajibu huts, Nori seaweed nets, Torii gates, and lanterns. Our tour starts and ends in Kumamoto.
7-Day Tour
Our 7-day tour offers a deeper exploration of the Nori seaweed farms, timed with the tides. We then travel to the southern part of the Ariake Sea, where we photograph the unique submerged pathways of the seaweed farms and spectacular rock formations. Next, we head north to capture the gradual immersion of Torii gates as the tides rise. For those interested, we also visit Kumamoto’s Suizen-ji Joju-en Garden and the illuminated Kumamoto Castle at night. Our tour starts and ends in Kumamoto.

For All Levels of Photographers
Because photography is first and foremost a world of passion, connections, and sharing, we are thrilled to welcome all passionate photographers, regardless of their level of experience.
Beginner photographers appreciate the unique setting of Ariake's coastline to develop their technical skills, while also receiving tailored advice to refine their minimalist approach and their perspective on waterscapes.
Advanced photographers appreciate taking their time to ensure the quality of their work, knowing that logistics and travel are perfectly managed. This allows them to focus solely on their creative process, confident that they will arrive at each location, as many times as they wish, at the ideal moment for the best light and conditions.

Cultural Immersion
If time allows and based on your preferences, we also take the opportunity during our stay to photograph two major icons. Kumamoto, the cultural heart of the Ariake region, is steeped in history and elegance. Dominating the cityscape, Kumamoto Castle stands as a testament to Japan’s feudal past. Nearby, Suizen-ji Joju-en Garden offers a serene contrast, embodying the refined aesthetics of the Edo period. This meticulously designed garden, with its "miniature" landscapes (Shakkei) and tea houses, reflects the harmony between nature and human artistry.
My passion for Japanese history and culture, combined with the presence of my Japanese wife, ensures fascinating and enriching visits. You also benefit from an endless source of insights and anecdotes about daily life in Japan.

Highlights
During our tour, we visit famous places and multiple hidden gems. Amongst the famous spots, are:
Torii and Lanterns in the Sea
Nori Seaweed Farms
Tanajibu Fishing Huts
Submerged Seaweed Farm Pathways
Rock Formations
Kumamoto Garden and Castle
If you’d like to see the photo spots we visit during this tour, I invite you to browse my Kyushu portfolio here.

All the subjects featured in my portfolio have been photographed over many years. Some trees, rock formations, or other subjects may no longer exist in the same form, or may no longer exist at all. It is also important to note that the Nori seaweed farming nets are regularly relocated, offering fresh discoveries and new photographic opportunities each year.
If you are considering joining us for a tour, please do not hesitate to reach out for more details about these subjects. I’d be happy to share the latest updates based on my recent visits.

Best Periods
All our tours are custom-made and available year-round (except in July and August). However, not every season is ideal for all photographic subjects. To ensure the best possible photographic conditions in the San-in region, and based on my experience, I recommend the following periods:
March to June
December to February (Seaweed cultures)
During March to June, the climatic conditions generally allow for a closer and more precise approach to the coasts. The milder weather enables much longer photography sessions, which can extend into night photography, ideal for exploring Torii gates and lanterns.

In June, if the rainy season begins, we also benefit from morning mists that transform the coasts into mysterious, ethereal landscapes. However, since Nori seaweed farming is a winter activity requiring cooler waters, the nets are only deployed during the winter months. If this subject particularly interests you, consider our December to February tour instead (below).

From December to February, we take full advantage of the spectacular Nori seaweed farms and their nets, which are deployed across many locations on the Ariake Sea. While the weather is cooler, Kyushu never experiences extreme cold, making it comfortable to explore all the subjects mentioned above. The overcast skies typical of this season are perfect for minimalist black and white photography, and the colder, clearer water provides a striking contrast with the subjects being photographed.
No matter which season you choose for your Photo Tour with us, you’ll build a comprehensive portfolio of the Ariake Sea's iconic landscapes. Join us as we uncover its hidden gems, where every photograph tells a story of timeless beauty and untouched wonder.
