Hokuriku Region & Gassho-zukuri Houses

Nestled in the heart of Japan’s alpine landscape, the Hokuriku region is a land of dramatic contrasts, where deep winter blankets the mountains in heavy snow, shaping both the scenery and the way of life. Famous for its harsh yet breathtaking conditions, this area is home to the iconic Gassho-zukuri houses, architectural marvels with their steep thatched roofs designed to withstand the weight of winter’s snow. The ambiance here is nothing short of exceptional: the quiet stillness of snow-laden villages, the warm glow of hearths in centuries-old farmhouses, and the timeless beauty of a landscape untouched by modernity.

For me, Hokuriku in winter is one of Japan’s most magical regions. It is a place where tradition and nature exist in perfect harmony. If you’re curious to dive deeper into the story and craftsmanship of the Gassho-zukuri houses, you can read my article here.
