Japan Photo Tour: Capturing the Soul of Lake Biwa, From 3 to 5 Days

This Photo Tour is an invitation to explore the minimalist landscapes that have made Lake Biwa legendary among photographers worldwide. Together, we go beyond the well known spots to discover its hidden gems. We photograph over 50 subjects across 30 carefully selected sites, each chosen for its beauty, symbolic resonance, and photographic potential.
Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest and one of the world’s oldest lakes, is a cultural landmark that captivates visitors with its breathtaking natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and deep historical roots.
For over two decades, I have wandered its shores, discovering and rediscovering its unique landscapes with each passing season. Having the privilege of living nearby, every moment spent there is a new instant of serenity, rich with discoveries and encounters with the trees that have shaped my work along Biwa’s edges.
Through my Photo Tour, I have the pleasure of sharing my deep knowledge of the lake, its light, its hidden gems, and its distinctive landscapes with photographers eager to deepen their passion for minimalist photography. Whether you are drawn to color or black and white, the light of Biwa will not leave you untouched.
Why Join This Tour?
A Unique Photographic Experience
During this Photo Tour, we travel by private vehicle, taking our time to explore and savor each fleeting moment of light, in complete tranquility, far from the country’s tourist hubs.
Our 3-day tour explores the eastern shore of Lake Biwa while ensuring a morning visit to the major spots on the western shore, such as the Torii of Shirahige Shrine or the floating pavilion (Ukimido) of Mangetsuji Temple (photo below). We stay in two different hotels, both ideally located.
A full exploration of Lake Biwa’s shores requires more time. Our 5-day tour allows us to circle the entire lake while dedicating ample time to photography sessions. It also permits revisiting certain spots depending on the weather conditions. We stay in four different hotels, including one night in an Onsen Ryokan.
Accommodations are carefully chosen for their location and quality, ensuring we are always just steps away from the lake to capture the exceptional morning light, according to your wishes and rhythm.
In winter, we visit nearby Lake Yogo to capture its snowy landscapes, weather permitting (photo below).

This allows them to focus solely on their creative process, confident that they will arrive at each location at the ideal moment for the best light and conditions.
Cultural Immersion
We also take advantage of the proximity to remarkable historical and cultural sites, offering you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of Japanese culture. Depending on your preferences, our 5-day tour may include visits to temples, castles (such as the national treasure Hikone Castle or the elegant Nagahama Castle, 2 photos below), and historic villages.
My passion for Japanese history and culture, combined with the presence of my Japanese wife, ensures fascinating and enriching visits. You also benefit from an endless source of insights and anecdotes about daily life in Japan.

All the subjects featured in my portfolios have been photographed over many years. Some trees or other subjects no longer exist in the same form or no longer exist at all. The challenging conditions along the shores of Lake Biwa also mean that not all locations are accessible year round.

Best Periods
All our tours are custom-made and available year-round (except in July and August). However, not every season is ideal for all photographic subjects. To ensure the best possible photographic conditions, and based on my experience, I recommend the following periods:
April to June (Sakura to rainy season)
December to February
In early April, we take advantage of the cherry blossom season to visit the iconic Hikone Castle, renowned for its breathtaking sakura. Considered one of Japan’s most beautiful cherry blossom spots, it’s a must-visit for enthusiasts of the season.
In June, depending on the year, we capture the intriguing misty conditions if the rainy season has begun, while the foliage of the trees contrasts beautifully with the lake’s clear horizon.
In winter, however, we explore the unique structure of these trees in their singular aquatic environment. And it’s naturally the period I recommend for lovers of minimalism.
