Lake Biwa is one of the world’s oldest lakes. Steeped in history and culture, it appears in classics like The Tale of Genji and has long been a crossroads for legends and spirituality.
Spanning 670 km², the Biwa is fed by 460 rivers and divided into two distinct sections, the shallow Kōmi and the deep Ōmi. Nestled near the ancient imperial capital, Kyoto, Lake Biwa’s shores are dotted with temples, shrines, and stunning landscapes, offering endless inspiration.
Certainly, Lake Biwa is the most interesting lake I have had the pleasure of working on in the last 25 years, after Lake Geneva. The geographical similarities between these two lakes are quite intriguing, considering the distance that separates them. Both have been the subject of one of my exhibitions commissioned by the Lake Geneva Museum in Switzerland (2015) and the production of a book.
