A long-term project on the minimalist and poetic landscapes of Lake Biwa, across all seasons.

Lake Biwa is one of the world’s oldest lakes. Steeped in history and culture, it appears in classics like The Tale of Genji and has long been a crossroads for legends and spirituality.

 

Spanning 670 km², the Biwa is fed by 460 rivers and divided into two distinct sections, the shallow Kōmi and the deep Ōmi. ​Nestled near the ancient imperial capital, Kyoto, Lake Biwa’s shores are dotted with temples, shrines, and stunning landscapes, offering endless inspiration.

Lake Biwa is definitely the most fascinating lakes I’ve had the pleasure of photographing over the past 25 years, alongside Lake Geneva. Both have been the subject of one of my exhibitions commissioned by the Musée du Léman in Switzerland and the production of a book in 2015.
