Whether it be for some hours, some days or a couple of weeks, every moment spent in Kyoto is always an enthralling yet complex experience. The ambivalence of the modernity facing traditions is palpable in every place of the city.

Luckily, and as part of my ongoing project about the Japanese Buddhist statuary, I have visited this lovely city and its numerous temples for many years. Consequently, this KYOTO book is a long term project that was built gradually.

All things considered, I eventually decided to gather in these pages my very personal opinion about the traditional Kyoto symbols through 43 photographs. Most of them were taken in temples and shrines. They are at once the reflection of a child dream for more than 30 years and the result of several stays in Kyoto during the past 10 years.

The book is deliberately a very simple one that doesn’t include any texts but focuses on pictures. The captions are both in Japanese and in English.

As always, it comes with a gorgeous calligraphy of Master Saburo Takatsuka (Kagoshima city) who produces regularly traditional calligraphies related to my work. I am very honored by this close collaboration.

This book is also a first issue of a thematic series to come about Japan.
